Penang Exchange 2022

Programme

Penang Exchange 2022

Date: 30th September to 2nd October 2022
Location: George Town, Penang

Theme: “Bridging Cultures Through Arts”

The Malaysian Craft Council (MCC) made its mark on one of Malaysia’s most renowned islands, Penang, known for its rich tapestry of colors, cultures, and its commitment to preserving and showcasing beautiful arts.

In collaboration with the University of Science, Malaysia (USM), the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture (MOTAC), Tourism Malaysia, the Japanese Foundation, the Penang State Department of Arts & Culture, the British Council, Penang Peranakan Mansion, Think City Penang, the Penang State Government Office, and several other agencies, MCC proudly organized the Penang Exchange 2022.

This unique event, held from 30th September to 2nd October 2022, was designed to champion local artisans while immersing the public in the rich cultural heritage of the craft industry.

Following the tremendous success of the Kelantan Exchange in 2020 and 2021, MCC sought to bring the same energy and innovation to Penang, often called the Pearl of the Orient. Penang is a state celebrated for its vibrant harmony of multi-racial and multi-cultural communities, reflecting Malaysia’s diversity as a whole. The Penang Exchange 2022 aimed to unite like-minded organizations to educate, nurture, and raise awareness about the uniqueness of Malaysian local crafts.

The event provided an inclusive platform for local artisans to position themselves, connect with the public, and reach the right audiences, helping to accelerate their growth in the industry without relying heavily on middlemen or traders.

The three-day event took place across three distinct venues, with Think City as the central location for the entire showcase. This venue hosted artisanal vendors, talks, workshops, and a vibrant Street Food Fiesta. Dewan Budaya USM featured the P. Ramlee Theatrical Concert: Of Life, Love & Inspiration during the evening, while The Dondang Sayang Soiree Gala Dinner on the final day at the Peranakan Mansion was graced by royal guests, dignitaries, and the Who’s Who of the cultural scene.

Through events like the Penang Exchange 2022, MCC aims to be the voice of Malaysian artisans, providing accurate representation while combating monopolies and manipulation in the industry that have led to the decline of invaluable crafts.
